Olori Janet Afolabi Foundation Launches Newswatch 5 Lecture Series in Lagos

The Olori Janet Afolabi Foundation unveiled the Newswatch 5 Lecture Series at Ijakadi Hall, Radisson Blu Hotel in Ikeja. The event also paid tribute to the late Yakubu Mohammed, a pioneering media icon and co-founder of Newswatch. Chief Tola Adeniyi described Mohammed as a dedicated journalist who “desired, perspired, and acquired the journalism feat.” He noted that Mohammed laboured for the profession with quiet determination and integrity. In her remarks, Olori Janet Afolabi reflected on the mentors who shaped her career. She spoke of the founding Newswatch team’s commitment to truth and public trust in journalism. Ray Ekpu praised Mohammed’s thorough storytelling and modern, moderate faith. The hall was filled to capacity with media elders, royal dignitaries, academics, and colleagues. Attendees included Oba Kayode Afolabi of Apomu, Princess Obalanlege of Ota, Prof. Tayo Popoola and other leading figures from Nigerian journalism and academia.

I'm not convinced a one-off lecture series can address deep challenges in Nigerian media; we need sustained structural reforms.

Organizers could involve local journalism schools to keep the series relevant and inspire a new generation of media professionals.
