PDP Faction to Ratify Goodluck Jonathan as 2027 Presidential Candidate
A splinter group of the Peoples Democratic Party will hold a Special National Convention in Abuja this Saturday to formally approve former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as its flagbearer for the 2027 election. The event, set for the A Class Event Centre in Wuse 2 at 10am, follows a waiver granted on May 19 by the faction’s screening committee. Chaired by former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, the committee cleared Jonathan as the sole aspirant in recognition of his tenure as deputy governor, governor, vice president, and president. A recent Federal High Court judgment in Abuja also affirmed Jonathan’s eligibility, dismissing a suit aimed at blocking his candidacy for lack of legal standing. The faction described that suit as frivolous and said the ruling paves the way for his participation. Jonathan has not formally declared his intention to run. When pressed by supporters, he said a presidential bid “is not a computer game” and vowed to consult widely before making any decision.
