Middle East Conflict Sparks Fuel Surge, Farmers Warn of Looming Food Crisis

The ongoing war in the Middle East has driven up global crude prices and sent Nigeria’s pump price of petrol sharply higher. Civil society groups and farmer associations warn this spike threatens food production and could push market prices beyond the reach of ordinary Nigerians. All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN) President Mohammed Magaji urged the Federal Government to make fuel available and affordable for farmers. He noted that petrol powers irrigation pumps and transport, and without intervention production costs and food prices will climb. Dr. Nkechi Okafor of AFAN’s FCT chapter and Sandra Victor-Gwafan of DeBranch Farmers Limited echoed these concerns. They warned that higher fuel costs will drive up transport fares, input prices, and generator use, leading to steeper food prices in coming weeks. Experts call for urgent government measures: subsidy or targeted support for agricultural fuel, investment in rural infrastructure, and promotion of renewable energy solutions like solar irrigation and cold storage. These steps could help stabilise supply chains and protect both producers and consumers.
