Spain Bars US Warplanes from Its Airspace in Protest Over Iran Attacks

Spain Bars US Warplanes from Its Airspace in Protest Over Iran Attacks — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Madrid has barred US aircraft based in Morón and Rota from taking part in attacks on Iran. Defence Minister Margarita Robles said Spain will not authorise any war-related missions from its bases. Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares added the move aims to prevent an escalation of the conflict. Since February, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has criticised US and Israeli strikes on Iran as reckless and illegal. He has rejected all related flight plans, including refuelling operations, and insisted Spain remains a sovereign nation that will not support illegal wars. Some US bombers have since been stationed at RAF Fairford in the UK. Spain will only allow emergency landings or transit in urgent cases. This reflects Madrid’s firm stance of “no to war.” I believe the era of hypocrisy is about to end. Evil prevails when good men choose to do nothing.

I'm not convinced halting missions from Morón and Rota alone can prevent escalation; diplomatic channels seem equally important in this crisis.

Spanish bases might need more robust rules of engagement to balance alliance commitments with national policy, ensuring any future missions reflect clear parliamentary oversight.
