Nigeria’s ₦70,000 Minimum Wage Worth $51 as Mauritius Leads Africa at $374

Mauritius has the highest monthly minimum wage in Africa when converted to US dollars, at $374.21. Morocco follows with $365.55, while South Africa ranks third at $311.23. The ranking, based on official wage figures and exchange rates as of July 24, 2026, shows how currency strength affects the real dollar value of workers’ pay. Botswana occupies 10th place with $153.97 per month, while Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Tunisia, Algeria, Cape Verde and Libya also made the list. Nigeria did not make the top 10. Its ₦70,000 monthly minimum wage was valued at about $51.43, slightly above Ghana’s $50.54 but far below Botswana’s entry-level top-10 figure. The figures underline that a higher wage in local currency does not always translate into stronger purchasing value internationally, especially where exchange rates are weak.
