Harvey Weinstein Hospitalised After Heart Failure at Rikers Island

Harvey Weinstein Hospitalised After Heart Failure at Rikers Island

Disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein suffered heart failure linked to pneumonia at New York’s Rikers Island jail about two weeks ago. He was transferred to Bellevue Hospital’s prison ward for emergency care, where doctors placed him on a heart monitor, started IV treatment and gave antibiotics to fight the infection. The 73-year-old remains under close medical supervision. His condition has improved but he is still recovering in hospital. Weinstein became a central figure in the #MeToo movement after multiple women accused him of sexual misconduct. He was convicted in New York in 2020, saw that verdict overturned in 2024, and was retried and found guilty again in 2025. He also faces a 16-year sentence from a separate Los Angeles conviction.

Has there been any word on what kind of follow-up care he's set to receive now?

It's hard not to notice this latest medical emergency coming while he's in prison isolation for past crimes.

It seems unfair to treat him differently just because he's a high-profile inmate; medical needs should be equal.

Authorities ought to ensure his medical care meets prison health standards and keeps other inmates' safety in perspective.
