Finance Minister Refutes Atiku’s Take on IMF Report, Highlights Reporting Reforms
The Finance Minister challenged former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s interpretation of the IMF’s recent assessment. He clarified that the IMF did not accuse the government of illegal spending but pointed out gaps in the timing, comprehensiveness and presentation of fiscal reports. He noted this feedback supports President Tinubu’s push for a single, harmonised budget framework and praised reforms in revenue administration, budget credibility and digital financial processes, acknowledged by multilateral institutions and rating agencies. The minister cautioned against politicising technical observations as proof of unlawful expenditure and pledged to work with the National Assembly, oversight bodies and development partners to strengthen fiscal governance.
