Senator Salisu Champions Digital Economy Bill at Lagos AI Summit
Chairman of the Senate ICT Committee, Senator Shuaib Afolabi Salisu, highlighted Nigeria’s strides in AI, digital governance and cybersecurity at the T&A Legal AI Summit in Victoria Island, Lagos. He emphasized the need for regulatory sandboxes, risk-based AI classification and accountability mechanisms to foster innovation while protecting public interest. Reflecting on more than four decades in technology, Salisu shared his journey from studying Computer Science in 1982 to leading initiatives like the Central Admissions Processing System and the Lagos State Geographic Information System. He also noted the growth of specialised university programmes in Cybersecurity and Software Engineering and the establishment of the National Data Protection Commission in 2023. The senator announced that the National Digital Economy and e-Governance Bill has cleared the Senate and is awaiting presidential assent. T&A Legal co-founder Seyi Adisa projected that AI could contribute about $15 billion to Nigeria’s GDP by 2030 if the country continues to diversify and build a responsible regulatory framework.
