Senate Rebukes Makinde for Calling on UN to Probe Oyo School Abduction

Senate Rebukes Makinde for Calling on UN to Probe Oyo School Abduction

During Tuesday’s plenary, senators debated a motion on the rescue of 39 pupils and seven teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government. Lawmakers cautioned Governor Seyi Makinde for appealing to the United Nations, calling the move unstatesmanlike and insisting Nigeria’s institutions can handle security challenges. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele praised the Armed Forces and intelligence agencies for the successful operation, while observing a minute’s silence for three officers who died and acknowledging others injured. The Senate urged the federal government to pay death benefits and improve welfare, training and equipment for security personnel, and to intensify efforts to free all remaining abductees.

How do we balance respecting national institutions and seeking broader support when local security seems inadequate?

Absolutely, we must affirm our institutions' role while trusting outside partners when our security services need backup.

It does seem odd that the Senate treats a UN appeal as unstatesmanlike when they clearly struggled with the abduction response.

Isn't insisting on exclusively local solutions just limiting ourselves? Sometimes external oversight can push reforms faster.

Maybe a joint task force of federal, state, and community leaders could speed up those rescue operations next time.
