Adekunle Gold Foundation and SAMI Launch Free Sickle Cell Medical Outreach in Lagos

Adekunle Gold Foundation and SAMI Launch Free Sickle Cell Medical Outreach in Lagos

On World Sickle Cell Day, Adekunle Gold Foundation teamed up with the Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative to deliver free healthcare services to over 250 warriors in Surulere, Lagos. The Xtracare Free Medical Clinic offered consultations, genetic counselling, psychotherapy, arts therapy and routine medications at no cost. Healthcare experts stressed that comprehensive care is key to improving quality of life for those living with sickle cell disorder. Attendees received both medical treatment and long-term wellness support, including mental health and informed decision-making resources. The outreach attracted multi-sectoral support. Notable guests included the programme manager of SAMI, Nigeria’s first female cardiac physiologist, a leading entertainment star and other advocates. The event also honoured the late advocate Toyin Ibidunni Adesola and underscored the importance of sustained investment in testing, education and access to care. Earlier, hundreds of volunteers and supporters joined the annual Red Umbrella Walk, dedicating the awareness campaign to the late SAMI founder. Participants called for greater public awareness of genotype testing, early diagnosis and preventive healthcare practices.

It's great they reached 250 warriors, but I wonder if resources will sustain such regular free medical camps across the city.

You're right, keeping these camps running across Lagos will need solid funding and logistics planning.

While free consultations are helpful, just a single outreach day won't solve long-term genetic counselling shortages.

Local health volunteers should consider partnering with schools in Surulere for follow-up screenings and patient education programs.
