University counts differ by country because some databases include only recognised universities, while others also count colleges, specialised institutes and other degree-awarding institutions. The United States has about 3,180 universities, rising above 5,300 when smaller two-year and degree-granting colleges are included. China has about 2,495 universities, followed by Russia with about 1,010 and Japan with about 992. Nigeria has roughly 307 universities in recent counts. However, comparisons should be treated carefully because each country uses different definitions and accreditation systems.
