Uneven Growth on the Fish Farm: What We Learned
I spent months working on a fish farm and noticed something interesting: not all fish grow at the same pace. Even when stocked together, fed the same feed, and kept in identical ponds, some fish raced ahead while others lagged behind. On our farm, we called the slow growers “Meluge.” When too many appeared, we’d investigate stocking density, feed distribution, and water quality. Overcrowding lets stronger fish hog food. Poor feed spread also widens the size gap. And subpar water conditions can stress fish and stunt growth. Before harvest, we’d sort the Meluge from table-size stock. Selling them separately protected the value of our main harvest. Many farmers focus on cutting feed costs but overlook uneven growth, which can hurt profits just as much. Fish farmers, have you seen this on your own farm? What local names do you use for the slow growers?
