Tinubu Orders Probe of Meta, Google, X and AI Platforms Over Nigerian News Use

President Tinubu has instructed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to investigate Meta, Alphabet (Google), X and certain AI platforms. They face allegations of unfairly exploiting Nigerian news content. The action follows a petition by the Nigerian Press Organisation, which includes NPAN, NUJ, BON and GOCOP. The FCCPC will examine potential breaches of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018. The investigation will be independent, transparent and evidence-based, with all parties given a fair hearing. It seeks to safeguard Nigeria’s media ecosystem and democracy while respecting technological innovation.
