FIFA Extends Prestianni’s Six-Match Ban Worldwide, Threatening World Cup Debut

FIFA Extends Prestianni’s Six-Match Ban Worldwide, Threatening World Cup Debut

FIFA has confirmed that Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni’s six-match suspension will apply globally. If selected, the 20-year-old could miss Argentina’s first two games at the 2026 World Cup. UEFA imposed the original ban after Prestianni covered his mouth while directing an anti-gay slur at Vinícius Júnior during a Champions League tie. Although allegations of a racial insult could not be proven, he has already missed one match under the sanction. Ahead of the World Cup, the International Football Association Board introduced a rule making it a red-card offense for players to cover their mouths while insulting opponents. If Prestianni isn’t picked for Argentina’s squad, he will serve the remainder of his ban in UEFA competitions next season.

True, missing a key forward like Prestianni could really force them into a more conservative or rotated approach upfront.

A global six-match ban seems drastic for a cover-your-mouth gesture, but FIFA did affirm it applies worldwide.

It's harsh to punish a player so severely for simply covering his mouth while directing an insult; that feels disproportionate.

Coaches might need to test alternative wingers in friendlies so Argentina aren't caught off guard if Prestianni misses opening matches.
