Germany Misses Out on UN Security Council Seat After Five Decades
Germany failed to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for the first time since 1973. Austria and Portugal emerged victorious in the hotly contested Western European race. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul described the result as a “bitter defeat” and pointed to a concerted campaign by Russia. He suggested Germany’s strong support for Ukraine and its stance on the Middle East conflict influenced the voting. After four rounds of voting, Austria, Portugal, Trinidad and Tobago, Zimbabwe and Kyrgyzstan won seats for the 2027–2028 term. Germany received 104 votes, well behind Portugal’s 134 and Austria’s 131, prompting a review of its UN outreach strategy.
