Spanish Police Uncover Sophisticated Drug Tunnel from Morocco to Ceuta

Spanish Police Uncover Sophisticated Drug Tunnel from Morocco to Ceuta

Spanish authorities have uncovered an elaborate underground tunnel used to smuggle drugs from Morocco into Europe. The tunnel was hidden beneath an industrial warehouse in Ceuta, one of the few land borders connecting Africa and Europe. Investigators found a multi-level structure equipped with rail tracks, trolleys, cranes and sound-proofing. At roughly 19 metres deep, the tunnel featured water-pumping systems to prevent flooding and narrow passages barely 1.2 metres high. So far, the operation has led to the seizure of over 17 tonnes of hashish and €1.4 million in cash. Authorities have arrested 27 suspects, including two alleged ringleaders linked to past smuggling networks. Officials warn that parts of the tunnel remain flooded, suggesting the network could be more extensive. The cross-border syndicate is believed to use fishing vessels and land routes to distribute illegal drugs across Europe. Ongoing investigations aim to dismantle the entire smuggling operation.

How did authorities even detect such a deep tunnel beneath that warehouse in Ceuta? What technology could reveal underground smuggling routes like this?

I doubt they used sci-fi sensors here; probably more old school surveillance or informant tips at play.

An industrial warehouse seems like an odd choice for a tunnel entrance. I wonder if local inspections missed any warning signs for months or years.

Hard to trust most headlines—this tunnel might have followed old mining shafts or natural caves, not a fancy new construction.

Border authorities should consider more frequent ground-penetrating radar scans and random warehouse inspections to prevent any similar smuggling operations in future.
