Halle Berry: From Abuse Survivor to Oscar History-Maker

Halle Berry was born in 1966 in Cleveland, Ohio. Her father’s violent outbursts shattered the illusion of a stable home. When he left at age ten, her mother raised two girls alone on a nurse’s salary. As a young adult, Berry endured abuse in a relationship that damaged her eardrum and left her 80% deaf in one ear. It took time and courage to break free—echoing the struggles of millions of survivors. Her acting career then took flight. Memorable roles in Jungle Fever, Boomerang and Introducing Dorothy Dandridge brought awards and respect. In 2002, she made history as the first Black woman to win the Academy Award for Best Actress. Berry now uses her platform to advocate for domestic violence survivors and speak about healing from trauma. At 58, she remains a top Hollywood star, a mother, and a barrier-breaking legend for women of color everywhere.
