10 Nigerians Among World Cup Visitors Who Filed Asylum Claims in Canada

Canadian immigration authorities say 175 visitors who travelled for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have since filed asylum claims. The figure covers people whose temporary residence applications identified them as World Cup-related. Ghana recorded the highest number with 25 claims. Egypt and Colombia had 15 each, while Senegal recorded 10. Among visitors from countries that did not qualify for the tournament, Kenya had 15 claims, while Nigeria, China and Bangladesh recorded 10 each. Canadian officials said the data covers 175 asylum claimants out of 26,111 people with approved FIFA-related temporary residence applications as of July 20, 2026. They added that the number may rise if more visitors overstay and later seek refugee protection.

Do we know whether the figure is being treated as a Canada-specific issue or part of a wider pattern?

Ten Nigerian claims stand out in the headline, but Ghana's 25 shows this is not a Nigeria-only pattern among the reported visitors.

It is worth avoiding the assumption that every asylum claim is automatically abuse of a visitor route; the report only gives the filing numbers.

Authorities should communicate visa conditions clearly and process asylum claims fairly, while keeping the World Cup visitor category properly monitored.
