Ex-CCT Chairman Danladi Umar Granted N100m Bail, Trial Begins October 29

Ex-CCT Chairman Danladi Umar Granted N100m Bail, Trial Begins October 29

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama on Wednesday granted bail to former CCT chairman Danladi Umar, setting bail at ₦100 million with a matching surety and proof of Abuja property ownership. Justice Peter Kekemeke admitted Umar to bail after dismissing the EFCC’s argument that he might interfere with proceedings. The prosecution had argued the gravity of the offence and risk of witness intimidation. Umar faces a four-count charge of abuse of office, including allegations of using his wife’s bank account to collect ₦5.5 million and ₦6 million from contractors, and directing payments for his daughter’s tuition. He pleaded not guilty. The court adjourned until October 29 for trial, emphasising the presumption of innocence unless the prosecution proves a risk of interference, witness intimidation, or evidence tampering.

It's notable that the EFCC's challenge was dismissed yet the court set such a high bail requirement of N100m and surety.
