Political Office in Nigeria: Pathway to Service or Gateway to Corruption?
Many Nigerians today view national and electoral representation as a lottery jackpot instead of a chance to serve the electorate. The fierce scramble for political office has driven some aspiring leaders to arm young foot soldiers, fuel violence, and eliminate rivals within and outside their parties. Godfatherism and cash-for-ticket schemes often replace genuine vision and public interest. Loans and handouts decide nominees rather than community support or competence. This culture of corruption is passed down to the next generation, with dishonest loyalty, propaganda, and mismanagement undermining transparency and community development.
