Christian Organisations Warn Bus Preaching Ban in FRSC Bill Threatens Rights

Christian Organisations Warn Bus Preaching Ban in FRSC Bill Threatens Rights

Christian organisations have raised alarm over a proposed amendment to the Federal Road Safety Corps Bill that would fine or jail anyone preaching inside commercial vehicles. The Senate passed the amendment in 2026, introducing a ₦50,000 fine or up to six months’ imprisonment for hawking, trading or preaching in buses. It now awaits presidential assent. The Christian Council of Nigeria warned that equating evangelism with commercial activity infringes freedom of religion and expression. The council urged lawmakers to reconsider and hold broader public consultations before signing the bill into law. The Organisation of African Instituted Churches echoed these concerns, calling on the President to withhold assent. It urged dialogue with religious bodies and civil society to ensure road safety measures do not undermine constitutional rights.

How do people see this ban on bus preaching affecting everyday spiritual expression during daily commutes across the country?

Won't this ban blur lines between public preaching and personal prayer sessions on board? How dem go define that?

It seems odd that the FRSC would target in-vehicle preaching when there are bigger road safety issues still unresolved.

I'm not convinced preaching inside buses is the main cause of accidents; maybe lawmakers just needed a headline-grabbing amendment.

Transport unions could arrange designated stops or time slots for brief preaching sessions to balance road safety and religious outreach.
