Why Nigeria Should Prioritise Freight Rail to Reduce Transport Costs
Nigeria should prioritise freight rail to move fuel, cement, food produce and other heavy goods across the country. Moving large cargo by rail can reduce pressure on roads, lower transport costs and help limit damage caused by heavy-duty trucks. Freight rail could also make it easier for farmers and producers in inland communities to move goods to Lagos ports and other markets for export. Lower logistics costs may eventually help reduce the prices consumers pay. Passenger rail is useful, but cargo rail may offer a bigger immediate economic benefit. Buses and flights can continue serving most passenger travel while the country expands a reliable freight rail network.
