WHO Recognises NFVCB and Nigerian Experts with 2026 Tobacco Control Awards
Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) congratulated the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) and Nigerian-born public health experts Prof. Olalekan Ayo-Yusuf and Prof. Catherine Egbe for winning WHO’s World No Tobacco Day 2026 Awards. The NFVCB, under Director-General Dr. Shaibu Hussein, was honoured for its landmark 2024 regulation banning the glamorisation and promotion of tobacco in Nigerian films, music videos and skits. Nigeria became the first African country, and second globally, to introduce these entertainment media restrictions. CAPPA’s Executive Director highlighted how this recognition underscores the impact of sustained advocacy, strong regulation and evidence-based public health policies in protecting young people from nicotine addiction. He urged Nigerian authorities to fully implement existing tobacco control laws and resist industry interference. Each year, WHO celebrates individuals and organisations across its six regions for outstanding contributions to tobacco control. This year’s theme, “Unmask the appeal – countering tobacco and nicotine addiction,” exposes deceptive tactics used by the tobacco industry.
