Tinubu’s 774 Health Fellows: A Political Wildcard in the 2027 Elections

Tinubu’s 774 Health Fellows: A Political Wildcard in the 2027 Elections

Upon assuming office, President Tinubu was one of the country’s least popular leaders. His bold reforms, I believe, raised his approval from 16–24% in 2023 to over 50% by January 2026, according to a leading polling firm. But the latest figures show his approval slipped from 53% in February to 49% in March 2026. This decline could worsen as the election approaches amid rising living costs and lingering poverty. On 6 March 2025, Tinubu launched the National Health Fellows Program, hiring 774 graduates—one from each local government area—after a transparent selection. This promise brought renewed hope to many young Nigerians and their communities. A year later, most fellows remain jobless and uncertain after completing their placements. I believe this broken promise could become a significant factor shaping the 2027 election outcome.

Despite his approval rising to over 50 percent by January 2026, the recent dip below 53 percent suggests fragile support.

I'm not convinced that adding 774 Health Fellows will sway voters focused on economic challenges and security concerns.

Monitoring upcoming regional polls and local feedback can offer clearer insights into whether healthcare reforms like these fellows actually sway public opinion.
