Bye-Election Upset in Kano: APC’s Blow to Kwankwaso’s Fortress

The recent Dawakin Kudu/Warawa bye-election saw APC’s Shuaibu Rabiu claim 35,356 votes, while his closest challenger managed only a few hundred. This result goes beyond a win—it’s a firm message from Kano voters. Once considered Kwankwaso’s impregnable bastion, Kano has shown unexpected cracks in the Kwankwasiyya movement’s grassroots strength. The social media red-cap crowd may dominate online noise, but the ballot box told a different story. If APC can deliver such a margin in what was long viewed as Kwankwaso’s private estate, then 2027 will be anything but a stroll. Kwankwasiyya must shift focus from symbols to actual votes if it hopes to regain ground.

An APC win by tens of thousands in a Kwankwaso stronghold feels abrupt, but low turnout could have exaggerated the margin.

I'm not entirely convinced this bye-election upset signals a lasting shift rather than just a one-off reaction to local issues.

Opposition parties should focus on grassroots engagement and clear messaging if they hope to regain lost ground in future Kano elections.
