FG Intensifies Crackdown on Prostitution and Brothels Across Nigeria
The Federal Government has stepped up enforcement against prostitution and brothel operators in Abuja, Lagos, and Jigawa. Recent court rulings confirm that procuring, brothel-keeping and living off prostitution earnings remain criminal offences under the Criminal Code, Sharia and the Trafficking in Persons Act. Security agencies and Hisbah officials have conducted raids, leading to the arrest and conviction of dozens of commercial sex workers and brothel owners. Sentences have ranged from fines to several months’ imprisonment, with courts ordering closures of illegal establishments. The FG’s three-point plan pairs tougher prosecutions with economic support. Authorities plan to target pimps and traffickers, expand skills-training and micro-credit for rescued individuals, and run public sensitisation campaigns on the health and social risks of sex work. Officials say sustained enforcement, backed by rehabilitation efforts, is key to reducing poverty-driven prostitution and making cities safer ahead of the 2027 elections.
