Iran Demands Full Compensation from Gulf States for Facilitating US-Israeli Strikes
Iran has formally written to the UN, calling on Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan to pay reparations for providing bases, airspace and logistical support used by US-Israeli forces in attacks on Iran. The letter from Iran’s UN ambassador accuses these states of enabling strikes involving MQ drones, AWACS surveillance aircraft, B-1 bombers and F-15, F-22 and F-35 fighter jets. Tehran cites UN General Assembly Resolution 3314 and Article 16 of the International Law Commission’s Draft Articles on State Responsibility to argue that this support violated international law. Iran points to recent statements by US officials, including the president and CENTCOM commanders, acknowledging Gulf cooperation. It also notes reports that the US president is weighing further strikes on Iran, even as Pakistan’s military chief visits Tehran in an effort to prevent renewed conflict. The author suggests that developments could become a political issue in the US, with Democrats likely to criticize the administration over its regional alliances after the midterm elections.
