Abia Court Jails Man for 10 Years for Defiling Five-Year-Old Girl
The Abia State Government secured convictions in two child sexual abuse cases, marking a major step in its campaign against gender-based violence. A 35-year-old man from Akwa Ibom State was sentenced to 10 years by the Family Court at the High Court in Umuahia for defiling a five-year-old girl. A second offender, aged 32, received 30 years after being found guilty of defiling a 13-year-old. The Commissioner for Information said these verdicts underscore the administration’s zero-tolerance policy. He highlighted the work of the state’s Nchedo Sexual Assault Referral Centre at the General Hospital, Aba, which provides medical and psychosocial support. Current cases include a 60-year-old woman who survived an alleged gang rape and another five-year-old defilement survivor. The Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation noted that one of the convicts fled to Nasarawa State but was returned and swiftly prosecuted. She praised the collaboration among the Ministries of Health, Justice, Women Affairs, Poverty Alleviation, and the Nigeria Police Force in delivering justice.
