Building a Merit-Based Leadership Model for Nigeria
Nigeria’s democracy can be strengthened by a merit-driven system that rewards proven experience and knowledge rather than money or patronage. Candidates would need 10–15 years of progressive service from the ward level and must pass standardized exams in governance, law, economics, public administration and ethics. All political parties would operate accredited Leadership Schools. Aspirants rise through exam levels and verifiable service audits. INEC would vet every primary candidate, disqualifying parties that submit unqualified nominees to ensure only experienced leaders compete. A phased rollout over 15 years would begin with local government chair races and extend to state assemblies, governorships and the presidency. Defectors keep exam credentials but lose seniority, restarting at the ward level. This approach balances political freedom with accountability.
