Why Nigeria’s Police Need More Than Road Patrols

Why Nigeria’s Police Need More Than Road Patrols — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Policing in Nigeria still relies heavily on static road checkpoints. This outdated approach does little to deter criminals, who can spot officers from afar and choose alternate routes. Many modern cities employ control rooms with CCTV networks to monitor activity. I experienced this firsthand during a visit to South Africa, where I barely saw officers on the streets yet felt secure. It’s time to rethink our strategy. Investing in surveillance infrastructure and data-driven deployment could make policing more efficient and responsive.

Sure cameras add oversight, but they won't fix corruption or understaffed squads. Training and reliable power supply still major headaches.

Relying on static checkpoints feels like a game of hide-and-seek, since criminals simply reroute and avoid the long lines.

We shouldn't overlook how frequent power outages can leave control rooms dark, making CCTV a costly but unreliable crutch.

A phased rollout starting with CCTV-equipped checkpoints could test system reliability and gradually integrate control rooms without overwhelming local police budgets.
