SERAP Threatens Lawsuit If Assembly Doesn't Withdraw Social Media Shutdown Bill
The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has called on the National Assembly to pull back the Nigeria Data Protection (Amendment) Bill 2026. The bill, sponsored by a Delta North senator, would force social media platforms to open local offices or face shutdown within 30 days. In a July letter, SERAP argued the proposal is a backdoor route to censor online expression. It warns the relocation requirement would give regulators sweeping power to block platforms without judicial oversight or meaningful appeal. SERAP highlighted that the bill could breach both the Nigerian Constitution and international human rights standards. It has said it will pursue all legal options to protect citizens’ freedom of expression if the Assembly presses ahead.
