Minister of Marine and Blue Economy Adegboyega Oyetola has formally unveiled the NIMASA-donated Institute of Maritime Studies multipurpose building at the University of Lagos. The facility includes modern lecture theatres, research laboratories and specialised training spaces. Highlighting the significance of maritime trade—over 90% of Nigeria’s commerce—Oyetola said investing in human capital is vital for economic diversification, job creation and sustainable growth. He noted that the Nigerian Seafarers Development Programme has sponsored 2,459 Nigerians for international training, with more than 1,000 earning Certificates of Competency. The minister also announced plans to deploy the Cabotage Vessel Financing Fund to expand local shipping capacity and create up to 30,000 jobs. Ongoing port modernisation projects are expected to generate another 20,000 roles. University and NIMASA leaders emphasised the partnership’s importance in strengthening research, policy-making and industry-ready skills in Nigeria’s maritime sector.
