Sabalenka and Gauff Threaten French Open Boycott Over Prize Money

Sabalenka and Gauff Threaten French Open Boycott Over Prize Money

Women’s world number one Aryna Sabalenka has warned that players may boycott this year’s French Open if organisers fail to boost prize money. Coco Gauff has publicly supported the drastic step. The dispute centers on prize distribution at Roland Garros. Despite a 9.5% increase in the total purse to €61.7 million, players say they will still earn less than 15% of tournament revenue. They want at least 22% to match top ATP and WTA events. Sabalenka told reporters at the Italian Open that a boycott might be “the only way to fight for our rights,” but added she remains hopeful negotiators will reach a deal that satisfies everyone.

Boycotting seems extreme when they could negotiate incremental improvements first; jumping straight to a strike risks alienating fans and sponsors.

Fans and players should propose a clear sliding scale for future prize adjustments tied to revenue growth before next tournament.
