Reps Demand Security Chiefs Act on School Kidnappings or Resign
The House of Representatives has warned Nigeria’s security chiefs to tackle rising banditry, school kidnappings, and attacks on worship centres or step down. A motion presented by Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa condemned the surge in violent raids on schools and religious sites as a grave threat to national security and citizens’ rights. Lawmakers noted that frequent abductions have shaken parents’ confidence and added to the growing number of out-of-school children. They also highlighted the toll on rural communities, where farmers abandon farms and families pay huge ransoms to free loved ones. The House urged President Tinubu to launch an aggressive strategy to dismantle bandit networks and secure vulnerable areas. Committees on Defence, Army, and National Security were tasked to monitor progress and report back within two weeks.
