A Family Court sitting at the Magistrate Court in Aba, Abia State, has convicted a 30-year-old security guard at Radiant Glory Academy, Umuichichi, for sexually abusing a 10-year-old pupil. The court found him guilty on two counts of indecent assault and instilling fear in a minor. He received a one-year prison term without the option of a fine on the first count. He was also sentenced to one year on the second count, with an option of a ₦200,000 fine. Both sentences will run concurrently. Child-protection groups Vivacious Development Initiative and the Abia chapter of the Child Protection Network welcomed the conviction. They said it underscores the need for stronger child-protection laws, enforcement and deterrent penalties for offences against children.

A child should never have to face fear in a school environment. The conviction is serious, but the harm described is deeply troubling.
