US Fans Urge FBI and DOJ to Investigate Brazilian Ref Raphael Claus Over Balogun’s Red Card

Evan, a US soccer fan with nearly 100,000 YouTube followers, is calling on the FBI, CIA and Department of Justice to investigate Brazilian referee Raphael Claus after he sent off Folarin Balogun in the USA vs Bosnia & Herzegovina match. Balogun had already scored but was dismissed after Claus reviewed the incident in slow motion rather than real time, a practice that appears to conflict with IFAB and VAR protocols. Similar challenges by other players, including Lionel Messi, went unpunished. Claus was previously called to testify in a 2024 Brazilian Parliament probe into match fixing and irregular cards, and several clubs had demanded his removal. US supporters now plan to challenge FIFA’s rules on protocol appeals to overturn the red card.

Do you think federal agencies really have the authority to probe a referee's decision in an international friendly match?

Which legal basis could the FBI cite to open such a probe into a referee's call?

It's unusual to see calls for FBI or DOJ involvement over a single red card, even from a fan with a big YouTube following.

Come on, na football match this be, not a crime scene investigation, the DOJ won't waste time on a ref's whistle.

If fans feel refereeing errors cost the team, supporting clearer VAR protocols might be a more effective route than federal inquiries.
