Secret Stockpile: South Africa’s Hidden Weapons-Grade Uranium
Dr Kelvin Kemm revealed in a recent interview that South Africa still holds weapons-grade enriched uranium in a top-secret, high-security facility. This material dates back to a clandestine nuclear weapons programme from the 1970s and 1980s. He recalled how President de Klerk ordered engineers to halt production midway through their seventh device. The workspaces were locked, papers left on desks and handwritten duty rosters remained on the walls, all inside a windowless bunker. Today, the remaining enriched uranium occupies one building on a secure 2,000-hectare site. It sits behind multiple fences, spread across 150 buildings, and is known only to a handful of officials. Kemm stressed that any covert transfer of this stockpile would violate national non-proliferation rules. According to him, bypassing the council in charge of weapons control is virtually impossible.
