Super Falcons Lose 3-2 to WAFCON Debutants Malawi in Opening Match
The Super Falcons opened their WAFCON 2026 title defence with a disappointing 3-2 loss to tournament debutants Malawi. Temwa Chawinga scored twice, while captain Tabitha Chawinga added another as Malawi earned a famous victory. Rasheedat Ajibade converted a penalty and Uchenna Kanu scored after coming on, but Nigeria struggled to match Malawi's intensity and attacking pace for much of the game. Esther Okoronkwo said the team started slowly and must learn quickly ahead of the next fixture. Asisat Oshoala apologised to supporters and admitted the performance fell below expectations. She also noted that women's football across Africa has improved, with more teams now capable of challenging the traditional powers. Nigeria now face Zambia in a crucial group match. The Super Falcons will need a much stronger display to keep their hopes of retaining the WAFCON title on track.
