Tinubu Bids Farewell to Team Nigeria Ahead of Glasgow 2026

Tinubu Bids Farewell to Team Nigeria Ahead of Glasgow 2026

President Bola Tinubu will officially send off the 74-member Team Nigeria at a ceremony in Abuja’s Presidential Villa. He will urge athletes and officials to maintain the nation's strong sporting reputation as they depart for the Commonwealth Games. After weeks of training in Abuja, the squad leaves for Aberdeen on Friday for a three-week preparatory camp before moving on to Glasgow. Nigeria hopes to improve on its 35-medal tally from the 2022 Games in Birmingham, where it ranked as Africa’s top nation. The 2026 Commonwealth Games run from July 23 to August 2. This presidential send-off highlights the Federal Government’s backing of Team Nigeria’s medal ambitions.

It's interesting that all 74 athletes trained locally; I wonder if our facilities can truly match the demands of international competition.

Coordinating international training camps or inviting more foreign coaches before departure could sharpen Team Nigeria's readiness for the Commonwealth Games.
