Over 1.3 Million Nigerian UK Visa Applications Turned Down in 21 Years
Official UK Home Office data shows that 1,344,595 visa applications from Nigeria were refused between 2005 and the first quarter of 2026. This ranks Nigeria second globally in UK visa rejections after India. Despite the high refusal numbers, Nigerians also secured 2,723,558 UK visas over the same period. That made Nigeria the top African recipient of entry clearance, ahead of South Africa and Egypt. Visitor visas accounted for 83.8 per cent of refusals. Study, work and family visa categories also saw sizeable rejection rates. Refusal rates peaked at nearly 50 per cent in 2006 but fell to 21 per cent in 2023 before rising again under tighter immigration rules introduced in 2024. Experts link the surge in applications to economic challenges at home. Recent changes to salary thresholds and dependent visa rules have led to a sharp drop in new submissions, but demand remains high.
