US to Block Passports for Americans Owing Over $2,500 in Child Support

The US Mission in Nigeria has issued a reminder to American citizens who owe more than $2,500 in unpaid child support. Under federal law, the Department of State and Health and Human Services can deny new passports or revoke existing ones until arrears are settled. Americans abroad with revoked passports can apply for a limited-validity document to return directly to the US. Full passport privileges are restored only after the outstanding debt is paid in the state where support is owed. Even after settling the debt, it may take two to three weeks for records to be updated and travel eligibility to be restored. Those affected are urged to contact their state child support enforcement agency before reaching out to the nearest US embassy or consulate.

I wonder how many American citizens based in Nigeria get their passports blocked for owing over $2,500 in child support? Any data on that?

It seems this policy could mainly target deadbeat parents, but I suspect some might struggle with genuine financial hardship or legal disputes.

Blocking passports feels too harsh when other enforcement measures might secure child support without punishing all family mobility rights.

Any affected parent should settle outstanding arrears promptly or seek a court-approved payment plan to avoid passport revocation under this federal policy.
