When Sani Abacha Met MKO Abiola at Aso Rock: A Defining Moment in the June 12 Crisis
In 1994, General Sani Abacha welcomed Chief MKO Abiola to Aso Rock Villa as Nigeria grappled with the fallout of the annulled June 12, 1993 election. Abiola had won a landmark vote that cut across regional and ethnic lines, only for General Babangida to cancel the results. His exit led to an interim government, which Abacha toppled later that year. Many Nigerians briefly hoped Abacha would reinstate the June 12 mandate after meeting Abiola. Those hopes ended when Abiola declared himself president in June 1994 and was promptly arrested for treason. Abiola spent four years in detention before dying in 1998, just weeks after Abacha’s sudden death. His struggle later inspired Nigeria’s official Democracy Day and earned him a posthumous GCFR honour.
