Tinubu Greenlights Lagos-Ibadan Expressway Reconstruction and 400km Highway Extension

President Bola Tinubu has approved adding 400 kilometres to the Fourth Legacy Highway, extending it from about 700km to roughly 1,100km. He also authorised the reconstruction of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway using reinforced concrete pavement, aiming for a 50- to 100-year lifespan. Works Minister David Umahi said the new highway stretch will link North-Central and North-East Nigeria, passing through several historic towns before reaching Taraba State. The project highlights the administration’s push to boost regional connectivity and economic activity. Umahi noted that sections of the Lagos-Ibadan road began failing less than five years after rehabilitation. He secured approval to rebuild the 135km dual carriageway with concrete to avoid repeated maintenance. The President also ordered completion of the previously abandoned Ibi Bridge, the design and award of the 5.76km Lau Bridge over the Benue River, and dualisation of another 400km on the East-West corridor between Lokoja and Benin.

Extending the highway alone won't solve traffic snarls; focusing on public transportation and local road repairs might yield quicker relief.

Establishing a dedicated maintenance fund and schedule now will help preserve that 50- to 100-year pavement lifespan right from the start.
