UK Parliament Approves Ban on Cigarette Sales for Anyone Born After 2008

UK Parliament Approves Ban on Cigarette Sales for Anyone Born After 2008

Both houses of the UK Parliament have passed the Tobacco and Vapes Bill to stop anyone born on or after January 1, 2009 from ever buying tobacco products. Once signed into law, the government can also extend indoor smoking bans to playgrounds, school grounds and hospital entrances. The bill would further tighten rules on vaping flavours, packaging and where e-cigarettes can be used. Officials say the move aims to create the first smoke-free generation and ease long-term pressure on the NHS. NHS data shows smoking causes around 75,000 deaths a year in England and contributes to one in four cancer fatalities.

Schools and local councils could step up free smoking cessation programs now to prepare for stricter sales laws and support those struggling to quit.
