Data Reveals Nigerians Make Up Less Than 3% of Migrants in South Africa

Data Reveals Nigerians Make Up Less Than 3% of Migrants in South Africa — 1 of 3
1 / 3

I’ve noticed Nigerians are often blamed for flooding South Africa. Yet official estimates put our community at around 40,000–60,000 people—just 1.5–2.5% of the total foreign-born population. Among African migrants, Nigerians account for only 2–3%. It’s frustrating to hear South African critics mock our accents when our country played a key role in ending apartheid—funding the ANC, offering relief and scholarships, and leading international sanctions. With such small numbers, it’s clear Nigerians aren’t “taking over” South Africa. The facts speak louder than the xenophobic noise.

I know frustration, but blaming Nigerians for everything seems misplaced when they're such a small share of migrants to South Africa.

Community leaders could share accurate migration stats more widely to challenge persistent stereotypes and ease tensions in host communities.
