US Imposes 50% Tariffs on Canadian Wine, Autos and Dairy
US President Donald Trump has signed an order imposing new 50% duties on a broad range of Canadian products, accusing Ottawa of unfairly discriminating against American exports. The tariffs will take effect in 30 days and cover items such as wine, hockey sticks and cement. Trump invoked a seldom-used provision of the Tariff Act of 1930, marking its first known application to modern trade disputes. Canada’s government called the move a unilateral violation of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement and said it was ready to intensify talks to resolve outstanding disagreements. Ottawa has already proposed measures to modernise the trade pact and defuse tensions. Trade experts warn the legal basis for the action could face court challenges, and industry groups fear further retaliation could increase costs for businesses on both sides of the border.
