When I Took a 32-Hour Surprise Trip to Sokoto for Love
Let’s share the funniest or most foolish things we’ve done for love. I’ll start with mine. During my NYSC, I fell head over heels for a Kogi girl who moved to Sokoto after camp. One Friday night at 11 p.m., she WhatsApped me: “Babe, I just dey miss you anyhow. If to say you dey here now…” With mumu love energy, I left Surulere with just ₦18,000 and a hoodie. I hopped a God is Good night bus and spent 16 hours on the road, arriving dusty and tired. She’d flown in to Lagos for a cousin’s wedding and didn’t even know I was coming. I used my last ₦3,000 on fura da nono, sat at the park, then caught the bus back. She sent a laughing emoji and “awww thanks for trying.” My wife still teases me as “Sokoto lover” whenever the power goes out — reminding me that love can make you do crazy things.
