Your NHF Savings Are Waiting: How to Claim Your Full Refund

Your NHF Savings Are Waiting: How to Claim Your Full Refund

Every public servant contributes 2.5% of basic salary to the National Housing Fund. When you retire, resign, or reach 50, you can claim your full contributions plus 2% interest per year. First, confirm your NHF record with the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria. Visit any state office or use the online portal to request your NHF Statement of Account. Correct any errors in your name, service number, or deductions before applying. Prepare these documents: NHF Form 1, retirement letter, IPPIS stoppage letter, valid ID (National ID, driver’s license, or passport), BVN printout, bank statement, two passport photos, and your NSCDC ID card. Submit at any FMBN state office near you. Processing usually takes 30–90 days. If you face delays, write to FMBN Customer Care and copy the CBN Consumer Protection Department. The application is free and there’s no deadline to claim your NHF balance.

Have you checked your NHF contributions record with the Federal Mortgage Bank yet, and was the process straightforward?

I've checked mine at the bank, and it was quite straightforward and quick.

It's surprising how many people overlook the interest component when claiming NHF refunds, since that extra 2% per year really adds up over time.

I'm not sure it's worth queuing at the bank for small balances; sometimes the travel time and form filling feel heavier than the refund itself.

Prepare copies of your salary slips, retirement letter, and identification before visiting the bank; having everything ready will speed up your NHF refund claim.
