FG Unveils Nationwide Strategy to Combat Drug Abuse

FG Unveils Nationwide Strategy to Combat Drug Abuse

The Federal Government has announced plans to expand addiction treatment and rehabilitation services across the country. Primary healthcare centres and general hospitals will receive more screening tools and trained staff, while the number of accredited rehab facilities will rise. Drug abuse is now being framed as both a public health and national security challenge. Officials highlighted the need to reduce stigma so more Nigerians seek help and called for prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and law enforcement to work together. Plans include tougher controls on pharmaceutical supply chains with improved security at narcotic warehouses, better inventory tracking and stronger collaboration with regulators. At the same time, the policy ensures patients in pain from surgery, cancer or sickle cell disease maintain access to essential medicines like morphine. Speaking at the Maiden National Drug Use Summit, government representatives and stakeholders from health, education, law enforcement and civil society urged coordinated action to curb substance abuse and protect future generations.
