Goje Proposes 20-Year China-Led Management of Nigeria’s Power Sector
Senator Danjuma Goje has urged the federal government to hand over Nigeria’s electricity industry to an advanced country, preferably China, for 20 years. He believes a single, comprehensive agreement covering generation, transmission, and distribution can deliver the stable power many sectors need. Goje spoke during the senate screening of the minister-designate for power. He criticised piecemeal reforms, pointing out that isolated contracts only shift problems from one segment of the value chain to another. He argues that letting a foreign partner run the entire system would allow it to recoup its investment before handing control back to Nigeria. The senator insists this model would not saddle Nigeria with debt. He sees it as a way to end chronic outages and unlock economic growth across the country. He challenged the incoming power minister to explore such a holistic arrangement without letting pride stand in the way of progress.
